Success Story in Singapore

Why Barcode?

Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world. Due to this space constraint, it is no wonder that buildings have to be built vertically, one higher than the other in time. Our story features one of the biggest construction companies in Singapore. At any one time this company is handling as many as 20 big construction projects.

Naturally, the company needs to have a lot of workers to work at the individual construction site. One problem that the company faces is that they have too many workers - some contract workers and others, ad-hoc. In addition, not all workers start work at the same time - some could come in late morning or mid afternoon, whenever they are needed. The company urgently needs a reliable tracking system so that they can accurately pay the workers.

Further to the "pay" issue, the company also faces another problem - their tools and equipment never seem to be enough irregardless of how often or how much they purchase. Therefore, they requested for SATO to also provide them with a solution to track the tools that the workers take with them.

The Solution...

Each worker is given an employee card with barcodes printed on it. When a supervisor picks his workers on a morning to work at the site, he will scan the employee's card as clock-in. This data is stored in the terminal until the supervisor scans the card again at the end of the day, where the clock-in-clock-out time will be uploaded to the computer at the Human Resource Department for calculation of the workers' pay. The information uploaded also contains the workers' ID and name so that the HR staff is able to counter-check whether the worker is contract based or hourly paid.

As for the inventory tracking system, SATO proposed to this construction company to place a small barcode printer at each of their working site. The tools that the workers take with them will be recorded and printed out in barcode form on a special water-proof label to be stuck on their helmets. When signing out, the supervisor will scan the tool-list label on the worker's helmet to ensure that the worker has returned all that he has taken. With this system, the workers would have to be more careful with the tools that they take with them and not lose them so frequently.

Win-win Situation...

With our expertise, SATO was able to once again provide simple yet logical and feasible solutions to our customers, helping them not only with tracking but most importantly, cost savings.
