SINGAPORE - August 1, 2003
April to July 2003 was a difficult time for Singapore and a few Asian countries. We were badly hit by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus. Suddenly, the economy went into a slump with the restaurants, retail outlets, entertainment joints most badly hit. Airlines, hotels & tourism were not spared as well. With the airborne virus looming, the only sectors that surged were the biosciences and companies that produce hygiene products.
Taking temperature became a normal practice in all hospitals, clinics, schools, government offices and most companies. Besides this important measure, another is Visitor Tracking. "Visitor Tracking is as necessary as taking temperature as one would never know a SARS patient as the virus takes about 10 days to surface and produce symptoms like a fever or a cough. Worse, some patients do not even get a fever. Therefore, if we could track all visitors, we could contact anyone who comes into contact with the suspected SARS case," explained Mr Lim Yee, Managing Director of Bar Code SATO Electronics (S) Pte Ltd.
SATO's HT200e did just that! With 3 simple steps of keying in the visitor's temperature, contact details and finally scanning his ID, the HT200e prints out a sticker for the visitor and at the same time, keeps the visitor's record in its memory card. Being small and portable, it goes to wherever the user wants to bring it to. Better still, it can operate either with an AC Adaptor or with battery. "It certainly feels good to be contributing to the society" quips the MD.
