TOKYO (Nikkei) - July 27, 2004
SATO Corp. (6287) has developed an inexpensive patient identification system that prevents medical accidents such as drug administration errors.
Using its bar code technology, the company developed a system that uses a bar code to display information such as name, birth date and blood type for each patient. A compact printer prints the bar code on the wristband that is attached to patients when they are admitted to the hospital.
A bar code can also display medicines prescribed by doctors. When a nurse administers an IV, a small scanner can be used to read the patient information from the bar code, thereby helping to prevent medical mistakes.
The system can manage patient IDs without being linked to expensive electronic patient charts or medical information systems.
A set consisting of an ID issuer, printer and small scanner will be priced from 1.5 million yen. The company will target sales at small hospitals, and aims to sell 300 sets worth 500 million yen in the first year.
